Islamic Perspectives on Life and Death

In Islam, life and death are integral parts of a divine plan, each holding profound significance. The Quran states: “He who created death and life to test you as to which of you is best in deed” (Surah Al-Mulk, 67:2), highlighting their purpose as a means of spiritual growth.
Life is viewed as a temporary trial, a period for worship and obedience to Allah. Death, in contrast, marks the beginning of the eternal journey, leading to the Hereafter. This perspective inspires Muslims to live righteously, prioritizing faith and good deeds over worldly gains.

Islamic burial practices reflect this understanding. The rituals, including Ghusl, shrouding, and the Janazah prayer, are performed with the belief that the deceased is transitioning to a new phase of existence. The Quran states: “Indeed, the Hereafter is better for you than the present” (Surah Ad-Duha, 93:4), underscoring the eternal nature of the afterlife.
Death is not viewed as an end but as a continuation of the soul’s journey. This belief fosters hope and resilience, encouraging Muslims to strive for Allah’s mercy and forgiveness. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “Remember often the destroyer of pleasures – death” (Sunan At-Tirmidhi), urging reflection on one’s purpose in life.
Understanding life and death through an Islamic lens provides comfort and guidance. It reminds believers of their ultimate goal: to attain Allah’s pleasure and eternal bliss in Paradise.
